It is with deep sadness that we share the unexpected passing of Timothy Roe Ketchum, age 53, of Portland, Oregon, who left us on Thursday, June 19, 2025. Born on December 30, 1971, Tim was cherished by his family, friends, and the broader Portland community for his warmth, creativity, and unwavering dedication to those he loved.

A Life Lived Fully

Tim’s journey began in 1971, and over the next half-century, he cultivated a life marked by passion and generosity. A graduate of Lincoln High School, he went on to earn a degree in Environmental Science from Portland State University. His early career with the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality reflected his lifelong commitment to ecological stewardship and public service.

In the early 2000s, Tim transitioned into community outreach, helping nonprofits bridge gaps between underserved neighborhoods and sustainable-practices education. His ability to connect with people and explain complex environmental issues in clear, relatable terms earned him respect and affection from colleagues and residents alike.

Beloved Friend, Encouraging Mentor

Tim’s greatest legacy was not in the projects he led, but in the people he touched. Known for his quick wit and heartfelt empathy, he was the first to offer a listening ear or a helping hand. Whether guiding young interns, organizing neighborhood clean-ups, or sharing his love for jazz, he made every interaction meaningful.

Family members describe him as the “glue” that held gatherings together—always ready with a story, a warm embrace, or the perfect soundtrack. He and his two younger sisters, Melissa and Dana, often collaborated on community events, with Tim spearheading the environmental themes and outings.

Love for Portland and the Outdoors

A true Portlander at heart, Tim felt most alive in the city’s lush green spaces. He regularly explored Forest Park’s trails, volunteered for Willamette River restoration efforts, and took part in urban gardening initiatives. His garden, tucked behind his Laurelhurst home, was famously abundant—brimming with native plants, pollinator-friendly species, and a few experimental vegetables.

Photography was another of Tim’s passions. Armed with his beloved Nikon camera, he captured spontaneous moments: children at play, dew on a morning bloom, or the skyline framed by Willamette River’s mist. His photos reflected his deep connection to both nature and community.

Cherished by Many

Tim is survived by his loving partner of 12 years, Alex Rivera; his sisters Melissa Ketchum (and husband Eric) and Dana Ketchum; and countless friends, colleagues, neighbors, and mentees. He also leaves behind Hope, his affectionate golden retriever, who was never far from Tim’s side.

His gentle spirit, thoughtful leadership, and joyful presence made a lasting impact. His loss is profoundly felt by those who were privileged to call him friend, partner, mentor, or family.

Memorial and Celebration of Life

A public memorial service will be held at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church (2408 SE 16th Ave, Portland, OR) on Saturday, July 5, 2025, at 2:30 p.m., followed by a reception at Laurelhurst Park. Attendees are encouraged to bring native plants or seeds as tokens of remembrance—continuing Tim’s legacy of nurturing life and community.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests donations to the Friends of Trees organization or to Portland State University’s Environmental Studies scholarship fund, both causes that were close to Tim’s heart.
