The Old Bridge community is reeling after the sudden and heartbreaking loss of Police Officer Andrew Paterek, who died unexpectedly on Monday, June 23, 2025. Officer Paterek, who had only recently been sworn in as a full-time member of the Old Bridge Township Police Department, is being remembered as a man of integrity, compassion, and unwavering dedication to public service.

In a statement released by Old Bridge PBA Local 127, colleagues shared their deep grief and admiration for the fallen officer:

“Andrew was more than a dedicated officer. He was a friend, a protector, and a true example of what it means to serve with integrity and compassion. His kindness, humility, and commitment to our community touched countless lives. Whether responding to a call, lending a helping hand, or simply offering words of encouragement, Andrew’s presence made this world a better, safer place.”

Officer Andrew Paterek’s journey into law enforcement began nearly a decade ago. In 2015, he joined the Old Bridge Township Police Department as an auxiliary officer, a volunteer position that speaks volumes about his desire to give back to his community. For five years, he served selflessly in that capacity before taking the next step in his career. He became a Class 1 Special Law Enforcement Officer, continuing his dedication to public safety and earning the respect of his peers and community members alike.

In November 2022, after years of hard work, Andrew was officially sworn in as a full-time police officer—one of five new officers welcomed to the department that year. His promotion was a reflection of both his commitment and his potential to become a leader in law enforcement. His time in uniform, though tragically cut short, was marked by exemplary service and a deep connection with the community he proudly served.

Officer Paterek was not only a man of action, but also a man of intellect. He graduated in 2021 from New Jersey City University with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. His educational background laid the foundation for a career built on understanding, fairness, and informed decision-making. Those who worked alongside him often described him as a quick thinker, a calm presence in high-pressure situations, and a reliable teammate who always went above and beyond the call of duty.

Old Bridge Police Chief Thomas Montagna expressed his condolences and praised Officer Paterek’s impact:

“Though his time with us was brief, he made a lasting impact through his professionalism, compassion, and unwavering commitment to public service. Officer Paterek exemplified what it means to be a community-focused law enforcement officer.”

The sudden nature of his death has sent shockwaves through the law enforcement community and among Old Bridge residents. He is being mourned not only as a police officer but as a beloved friend, son, and community member. The outpouring of support on social media and from local organizations underscores just how deeply Officer Paterek touched those around him.

His death is a painful reminder of how fleeting life can be, and how important it is to honor those who dedicate their lives to serving and protecting others. Officer Paterek’s legacy is one of service, sacrifice, and sincerity. He lived his life with purpose, showing up every day to make Old Bridge a better and safer place for all its residents.

Community members and fellow officers continue to share heartfelt memories of Officer Paterek—stories that highlight his humor, kindness, and unwavering dedication to duty. Whether he was helping a stranded motorist, calming a distressed child, or offering words of encouragement to a fellow officer, Andrew’s actions spoke louder than words.

The department has not yet released details regarding funeral services, but a public memorial is expected. In the meantime, the police department, PBA Local 127, and the entire Old Bridge community are standing together in mourning and remembrance. Flags fly at half-staff, black bands adorn badges, and heartfelt tributes continue to pour in from those who knew and respected Officer Andrew Paterek.

As the community reflects on his life and service, Officer Paterek will be remembered not just for the uniform he wore, but for the heart he carried. His legacy will live on through the lives he touched, the colleagues he inspired, and the community he served so faithfully.
