The Chaminade Julienne Catholic High School community in Dayton, Ohio, and the broader college football world are mourning the heartbreaking loss of Elijah Berman, a promising 17-year-old student-athlete and recent football commit to Eastern Michigan University. Berman tragically died on Tuesday in a motorcycle crash in Franklin, Ohio, just weeks after announcing his commitment to join EMU’s 2026 football recruiting class.

According to reports from the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the accident occurred near 6830 OH-123, at the northbound I-75 off-ramp. Authorities say Berman was riding his motorcycle when a semi-truck exited the highway and failed to stop, striking him in the intersection. Berman was rushed to Atrium Medical Center in Middletown, where he was later pronounced dead.

A Rising Football Star with a Bright Future

At 6-foot-3 and 300 pounds, Elijah Berman was more than just a physically dominant presence on the football field — he was a dedicated student, a natural leader, and a beloved member of his school and community. Just a month earlier, on June 16, Berman proudly announced his commitment to Eastern Michigan University, choosing the Eagles over offers from a long list of schools including Bowling Green, Ohio, Navy, Miami University, Kent State, Eastern Kentucky, Yale, and Pennsylvania.

In the 2023 season, Berman posted 34 tackles, including 9.5 tackles for loss and six sacks in just eight games, according to Dayton Daily News. His on-field performance had earned him recognition as one of the top defensive linemen in the state. College scouts saw in Berman not only elite potential but also the work ethic, discipline, and maturity necessary to succeed at the next level.

Remembered for More Than Just Athletics

Chaminade Julienne Principal Greg Mueller offered a heartfelt statement following Elijah’s passing, reflecting on the many roles he filled at the school:

“Eli was an all-around Eagle — a member of the football and track teams, had recently accepted an offer to play college football at Eastern Michigan University, was an Eagle Ambassador, participated in the Little Sibs program, and was a strong student with a big personality.”

In addition to his athletic achievements, Elijah was an active participant in school programs that built community, mentorship, and school spirit. As an Eagle Ambassador and member of the Little Sibs program, he helped younger students feel welcome, supported, and inspired — embodying the values of compassion and leadership.

A Family’s Pain and a Mother’s Grief

The devastating news was confirmed by Elijah’s mother, who posted on his X (formerly Twitter) account shortly after his passing:

“Please pray for us. And hold your family close. I’m in complete shock.”

Her raw and emotional message resonated with hundreds online, prompting an outpouring of condolences, prayers, and tributes from friends, coaches, classmates, teammates, and members of the broader sports community.

A Community United in Mourning

In honor of Elijah’s life, a community prayer service was held on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Chaminade Julienne Catholic High School. Students, parents, faculty, and community members gathered to grieve, pray, and remember a life that, though brief, left a lasting impact.

His teammates wore his number and laid flowers at a memorial site, while coaches remembered him not just as a star athlete but as a humble, respectful young man who always showed up with a smile.

A Legacy of Strength, Faith, and Determination

Elijah Berman’s story is tragically cut short, but the legacy he leaves behind is one of promise, passion, and perseverance. His dream of playing Division I football was just beginning to take shape, and in the hearts of those who knew him, that dream lives on.

The Eastern Michigan football program, in a statement, expressed their deep sorrow and support for the Berman family:

“We are devastated by the loss of Elijah Berman. Though he had not yet taken the field with us, he was already part of our family. Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”

As tributes continue to pour in from coaches, recruiters, teammates, and classmates, one thing is clear: Elijah Berman was more than a player — he was a leader, a friend, a brother, and a light to those around him.

Final Thoughts

In a world where headlines often highlight stats and scores, Elijah Berman reminds us of the human spirit behind the jersey. His life, filled with ambition, integrity, and love, serves as a powerful testament to the impact one young man can have on a community. As his family, school, and future teammates grieve this unimaginable loss, the words of Principal Mueller ring true: “Eli was an all-around Eagle.”

He will never be forgotten.

Rest in peace, Elijah Berman.
